The Exam

Section A: Music

Learners will study media products from three music-related media forms:

  • Music Magazines (MOJO plus other music genres)

  • Two set music videos ( Avril Lavigne 'Ska8er Boi' and Wheatus 'Teenage Dirt Bag'

  • Radio (BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge)

  • Industry / Regulation

In this section, learners will:

  • Analyse how music is represented across different platforms

  • Explore how media industries and technologies affect the production and distribution of music media

  • Consider how audiences interact with and respond to music content

  • Apply the full theoretical framework:

    • Media Language

    • Representation

    • Audiences

    • Industries

 Section B: News

Learners will engage with contemporary and historic newspaper front pages and online news content, typically from two contrasting newspapers (e.g. The Guardian and The Sun).

This section focuses on:

  • How news is constructed and presented to different audiences

  • The representation of events, groups, and issues in news coverage

  • The impact of media industries and regulation

  • The role of media contexts, including:

    • Political bias

    • Social and historical context

    • Economic pressures

Learners will compare print and online content, and examine how the news has adapted to the digital age.

Exam Structure

  • A mix of short answer and longer response questions

  • Based on set products and unseen materials

  • Requires confident use of media terminology, theory, and case study knowledge
